The Training Future
Leaders (TFL) Program was established by the US
Agency for International Development (USAID) in recognition of the
important role graduate education in the US can play in supporting the
ongoing development of targeted countries and regions. TFL will provide
academic scholarships and complementary leadership development opportunities
to emerging leaders in USAID priority countries in · Foster
national leaders who will be at the forefront of policy and socio-economic
development issues in USAID-assisted countries in the ANE region; · Provide
potential national leaders with advanced academic and practical training in
their fields of expertise while simultaneously strengthening their leadership
skills; · Strengthen
the scholars’ ties to the In addition
to academic training, the TFL staff will work with scholars and US host
universities to build individualized leadership development and community
involvement plans for each scholar. Scholars will be provided with a number
of professional development opportunities, including internships and participation
in professional associations and learning events, to ensure they develop
close professional linkages with their The first cohort of
Future Leaders will consist of 17 scholars enrolling in US degree programs in
the 2008/2009 academic year and who will be selected from among the following
countries and sectors:

for individuals from the above-listed countries and for the particular sectors
indicated for those countries. TFL is implemented by the Academy
for Educational Development (AED), a leading international NGO, under
